The densification of cities is a global phenomenon that residents of cities experience worldwide. While the densification is regarded as an effective measure to reduce the use of resources, open spaces are important for a public life in cities, where people can meet and interact. In densifying cities where open spaces are in decline, it is crucial that those left are planned well and benefit the wellbeing of its residents. In this online survey, we aim to find out how urban residents use public space and what attributes of the public environment are most important to enable these uses. One of the aspects we focus on in this survey is how people socially interact and how people and building density affects their experience in public space.
The study is conducted in Singapore and Zurich. Approximately, 1200 participants in Singapore and 300 participants in Zurich will be involved. The two cities are despite large cultural and climatic variation and large difference in scale, similar in that both undergo extensive densification due to their respective spatial limitations and extensive population growth. What experiences are unique to local environments and what phenomena could be global?
