Module Updates and News

Architectural Cognition in Practice

- We have had Asst. Prof. Jakub Krukar visiting the ACP group this week. He delivered a talk on Advancing Ecological Validity of Architectural Cognition at SEC. We have also submitted two posters and a talk for the WCS Symposium.

Semantic Urban Elements: Linking Urban Analytics, Design, and Usage for Cyber-Physical Cities

- Chenyi Cai was invited to give a lecture at the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, Shandong Jianzhu University. The schedule is confirmed and it is within “Data, Algorithms, Design, Fabrication” lecture series.

- Filip Biljecki gave an invited talk at Tongji University, College of Architecture and Urban Planning.

Dense and Green Cities

- Sri participated in a webinar panel discussion by Eco-mantra on 'Embracing Regenerative Design: Shaping the Future of the Built Environment' on 07 May 2024. The panel had a diverse set of speakers ranging from architects, landscape architects, developers, ecologists, academia, policymakers, community outreach representatives and private and public sector representatives. - The team submitted the poster for the WCS SoC and is preparing for the presentation.


Powering the City

- 2 papers accepted for the Int. Building Physics Conference (IPBC) 2024, one on the impact of BIPV on urban microclimate led by Ayca Duran, and another paper on Machine Learning and Fast Fluid Dynamics for indoor turbulent flow led by Christoph Waibel

- We submitted a journal paper on LCA of BIPV and PV panels to “Renewable Energy”. The work is led by Alina Galimshina

- Our review paper on urban PV got rejected due to formatting issues. Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews doesn’t allow for appendices, where we had put details of our method. We are reformatting now and resubmitting soon. The paper is led by Justin McCarty

- The Singapore hub has submitted 2 posters to the upcoming WCS symposium: One on urban mobility titled “Integrating Solar Photovoltaics and EVs to Decarbonize Singapore for Climate Mitigation” led by Jiazu Zhou and Yean Seanglidet, and one on urban planning and PV titled “Investigation of the impact of urban planning regulations on distributed energy system performance” led by Jidong Kang

Urban BioCycles Mycelium Digitalisation

- BIO Zurich: Selina, was accepted at the upcoming IASS2024 conference. The paper she presented is titled "A bio-based falsework system for the circular construction of shell structures" and it will be presented during the conference taking place from the 26-30 August 2024.

Agropolitan Territories of Monsoon Asia

- ur-scape website and online courses completed and made available at: https://ur-scape.com/, https://studio.ur-scape.com/. Joshua VARGAS is holding internal workshop on 13 May 2024, 2-4 pm @ Value Lab entitled "Building your own ur-scape database: learn how to import GIS data, into ur-scape, and make the import process better

Adaptive Mobility, Land Use and Infrastructure

- Jin Rui Yap passed her aptitude colloquium on 6 May, after presenting her doctoral plan entitled “Improving Adaptive Planning for Sustainable Mobility Transitions: Integrating Path Dependence and Multi-Scale Perspectives”.

- AMIL-LTA monthly meeting was conducted on May 7th, Prof Kay Axhausen and Dr Elliot Catherine shared the progress in E-bike city in Zurich. The adaptive mobility group and the strategic group from LTA joined the meeting and discussion.

The Sea-​City Interface

1. Researcher recruitment goes well. 2. A developed collaboration with IRAS is going on a good track. 3. All research activities go well.

Comparative Ecology of Cities

- Yue Zhu presented her research at EGU 2024. The title was 'A deep learning-based super-resolution DEM model for pluvial flood simulation'.

- Yue Zhu published a paper titled 'Urban expansion simulation with an explainable ensemble deep learning framework'. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.heliyon.2024.e28318 > Our team is going to hold a project workshop on 16-17 May.

- Our team member Naika Meili will be leaving the project at the end of June. We appreciate a lot for her contribution to the project so far.

Engagement Platform

- The EP Team is working on the technical integration of Global View and the Engagement Platform in preparation for the Global View Hackathon in the next training session in May. During this one-hour event, we request modules to bring and upload as many GEOData as possible on Global View to build critical mass.

News and Views

Future Cities Laboratory Global

- The preparation for FCL Global Exhibition at URA Centre is ongoing. The research modules are requested to verify and confirm the exhibits, devices, display objects that have arrived from Zurich.

- The module coordinators to consider submitting for poster presentation for the upcoming Create Symposium. The details will be emailed shortly.
