Module Updates and News

Dense and Green Cities

- Continuing his role from previous years, Thomas has been appointed to the jury of the 2024 IFLA AAPME Awards, an international recognition for excellence in landscape design and planning. Open to all IFLA regions and global practitioners, these awards highlight innovative projects in Africa, Asia Pacific, and the Middle East. They provide a platform for showcasing creativity, fostering collaboration, and inspiring future generations of landscape architects.

Powering the City

- Ayca Duran and Christoph Waibel were attending the International Building Physics Conference 2024 in Toronto last week. We presented 2 papers on Saturday, one paper on the effect of BIPV on the urban microclimate, and one paper on using Machine Learning for turbulent indoor airflow prediction. - Ayca was also attending the Building Physics summer school of the conference

- Jidong Kang and Prof Yuming Fu were attending the CREATE symposium. At the symposium, they had the chance to interact with Mr Wen Tung from URA to discuss ongoing work on urban planning and energy systems (BIPV) design

- Jidong Kang's conference paper, co-authored by Dr Chenyi Cai, titled as “How Do Urban Planning Regulations Impact Distributed Energy System Performance? An Integrated Energy and Land-Use Planning Approach” has been accepted for oral presentation in 16th International Conference on Applied Energy (ICAE2024). The accepted papers in this conference have chances to be published in Applied Energy.

Potential Agriterritories: Agrarian Questions under Planetary Urbanisation and Agroecological Transitions

- Several researchers from the module are currently presenting at the RC21 conference "The politics and spaces of encounters: advancing dialogues between and within the Global North and the Global South”, in Santiago, Chile.

- Session: "Marxist and post-colonial dialogues for the analysis of extended urbanization", paper contribution: "Territories of extended urbanization: tracing planetary struggles", Christian Schmid;

- Session: "Improbable Commons: A poetics of urban sociality", paper contribution "The improbable urban political ecology of weediness of Arcadia: Transhumant citizenship, extensive commoning, sympoetic world-makings", Metaxia Markaki;

- Session: "The political economy of peripheral urbanization: financialization, corporate power, extractivism and dependency", paper contribution "The environmental peripheralisation of Arcadia: Entanglements of political economy and urban political ecology in territories of extended urbanisation", Metaxia Markaki.

- We are hosting a visiting PhD student, Mr. Yiwei Zhang, from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), to work with the SEA module for the following five months.
