Module Updates and News

Architectural Cognition in Practice

Yuqin and Lara visited Asst. Prof. Panos Mavros at Telecom Paris, and both gave guest lectures for the Evidence-Based Design course at ETH-Zurich.

Semantic Urban Elements: Linking Urban Analytics, Design, and Usage for Cyber-Physical Cities

  • Chenyi gave a guest lecture to the NUS course: AI for Design.
  • Javier Argota Sánchez-Vaquerizo, from the Zurich hub, successfully defended his PhD titled "Simulating urban complexity for city co-creation on three scales".
  • A poster titled "My street is better than your street: Towards data-driven urban planning with visual perception", led by Matias, was submitted to ACM BuildSys'24.
  • A paper titled "What is a Digital Twin Anyway? Deriving the Definition for the Built Environment from over 15,000 Scientific Publications", led by NUS postdoc Mahmoud Abdelrahman, has been submitted for review.
  • Filip gave a Keynote presentation at a Geoinformation conference in Kuching, Malaysia

Dense and Green Cities

  • The SG team will conduct biodiversity surveys at one-north buildings (Wilmar and Solaris) next week. The survey will involve observing and mapping birds, insects, animals, and fauna visible. The team is working with a biodiversity expert (BioSEA) to advise on the methodology and templates.
  • The integration package is ongoing to capture the insights of the different work packages and derive correlations to density and greenery. The formalities for data sharing with Urbex have been completed, and the teams are now progressing in collaborating with the Urbex team on the data analysis.
  • Sri will participate as a panel speaker at the upcoming Design Futures Forum on Wednesday, 2 October, as part of the Singapore Design Week 2024. Themed as 'Designing Our Collective Future', the forum features thought leaders and practitioners from Singapore and around the world to explore how people – from an individual scale to a larger, societal one – and design intersect to make a positive impact and create a better future for all beings. Sri will be part of the session on 'Design For the Future of Sustainability' and will talk about Shaping a Nature-Positive Future.
  • A team of SUTD Masters students will visit FCL on 30 September 2024. The DEN team will share their ongoing research and insights, followed by an interactive session to discuss their ongoing thesis projects.

Powering the City

Urban BioCycles Mycelium Digitalisation

In Singapore on-going sample characterization and training and guidance of the final-year undergraduate students in their respective Final Year Projects. Arrangements are currently being made with both NTU and a contractor for the testing and setup of large elephant-skin inspired mycelium tiles on one of the walls in the campus.

The Sea-​City Interface

Rudi accepted an apppointment as a member of the Academic Committee of the Chinese Ministry of Education’s newly inaugurated International Joint Laboratory on Green and Low-carbon Urban Regeneration. The appointment is for five years.

Engagement Platform

This week we have delivered the another session of the EP training, focused on Data. In particular we showcased the various possibilities that FCL researchers have to store, share and visualise data through the FCL GlobalViews Platform and the Dataverse Environment. You can find the recording of the session here. The conversation around this topic will continue in the next sessions, scheduled for the last Wednesday of each months. If you want to attend them, please get in touch with your module coordinator or with Nicolò Guariento.
