Module Updates and News

Circular Future Cities

  • This week, the Zurich CFC team held a get-together with Prof. Rudi Stouffs, PI of the CFC module, who is normally based in Singapore but currently staying in Zurich.

Urban BioCycles Mycelium Digitalisation

  • In collaboration with bioSEA and Mykilio, an exhibit comprising of elephant skin-inspired tiles is currently on display on a wall at the entrance of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, NTU, Singapore (picture in the attached link). The tiles are of different designs and materials (concrete, clay, and mycelium-bound composite) and will be on display for a year to investigate the thermal performance of these tiles. Simultaneously, the team also hopes to bring awareness to the general public on the application of these tiles and mycelium-bound composites in the built environment. Following which, the team also plans to gauge public perception of this tiles as well through a survey.

Adaptive Mobility, Land Use and Infrastructure

  • The AMIL module held its routine semi-annual workshop with key stakeholders, LTA and URA, in Singapore on the morning of 22nd May at the Vlue Lab Asia, Future Cities Lab Global. During the workshop, Professor Bryan T. Adey (https://im.ibi.ethz.ch/en/people/prof-dr-bryan-adey.html) provided an overview of AMIL’s research progress and outputs, and outlined future research directions for the next phase. Professor Kay W. Axhausen (https://www.ivt.ethz.ch/en/people/profile.kay-axhausen.html), along with Zhuhan Jin and Assistant Professor Prateek Bansal, introduced research on the social network impact on joint activity scheduling, which holds value for simulating joint activities in activity-based transport models used by stakeholders. Assistant Professor Prateek Bansal (https://cde.nus.edu.sg/cee/staff/prateek-bansal/), together with Dang Vo Khoa, presented the latest progress in using large language models and data fusion techniques to generate transport data (activity schedules), addressing critical data sparsity issues faced by agencies. Jin Rui Yap (https://fcl.ethz.ch/people/researchers/yap-jin-rui.html), supervised by Professor Bryan T. Adey, shared her PhD research progress on modelling car-lite transitions (cycling propensities and infrastructure), which could potentially inform strategic policy design for local car-lite initiatives. Qiming Ye (https://fcl.ethz.ch/people/researchers/qiming-ye.html), with collaborators Canh Do Xuan, Dang Vo Khoa, Orlando Roman, Assistant Professor Prateek Bansal, and Professor Bryan T. Adey, presented ongoing research on transitioning Singapore’s bus transport system (fleet and infrastructure) toward a clean-energy future under an adaptive planning framework. This research integrates agent-based modelling (MATSim), surrogate modelling, and reinforcement learning to tackle the strategic planning challenges. The module received positive feedback and valuable comments from stakeholders.

Comparative Ecology of Cities

  • We are pleased to invite you to the upcoming Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) Global symposium titled ‘Comparative Ecology of Cities: Exploring the urban pattern-function relationships across cities’. Hosted by the FCL Global research group Comparative Ecology of Cities (CEC), this symposium invites researchers, practitioners, and all interested stakeholders to a half-day of knowledge exchange on the critical relationships between urban patterns and urban functions around the world. The symposium will take place on 26 June at CREATE Tower Seminar Room, Level 2. Register here: https://forms.office.com/r/dqmjmHqPgu
