The Platform Model

To facilitate interaction, collaboration, synergy, and exchange within the FCL Global ecosystem, which comprises internal members, entities, external partners, and stakeholders, we employ a platform model.

To facilitate interaction, collaboration, synergy, and exchange within the FCL Global ecosystem, which comprises internal members, entities, external partners, and stakeholders, we employ a platform model.

This model is not intended to provide direct solutions; rather, it offers a common infrastructure and generic building blocks that enable users to create their own solutions. Platforms aim to enhance outcomes and value by connecting people and enabling data and information exchange.

Each of the 13 research projects within FCL Global represents an ecosystem focused on a central research topic, such as human-centric building design, resilient blue and green infrastructures, adaptive mobility, future energy supply and consumption in cities, the interdependencies between urban areas and hinterlands, and many others. Scientists gather around these topics to explore diverse perspectives and contributions, creating a research network that mirrors the complexity of urban environments. This approach also identifies overlaps and common ground among different projects. Since much of the research still centres on individual topics rather than broader integration, it is essential to leverage these overlaps and commonalities to create synergies and address complex questions.

FCL Global Ecosystem

We have named this integrative entity the Engagement Platform. Its purpose is to connect FCL Global investigators and their stakeholders, fostering mutual benefits from their engagement. Researchers can share knowledge, information, and data (both public and protected) in a secure environment. This ensures that research projects are not conducted in isolation but are enriched through interdisciplinary interaction.

The platform is also beneficial for disseminating research outcomes to external stakeholders, experts, planners, and scientists interested in urbanisation and its complexities. This exchange occurs in both directions, allowing external partners to engage in dialogue with our investigators, either virtually or in person.

Content on the platform is organised to cater to diverse audiences, ranging from general, non-scientific explanations to academic articles, seminars, and events. This tiered approach ensures accessible knowledge at varying levels of detail.
The platform offers FCL researchers a single stage that can be customised to reach a broad audience, extending beyond academic peers. This approach aims to make science and research more open and accessible to industry and governance, thereby increasing the potential for meaningful impact.

However, achieving a critical mass of users remains a challenge. We plan to enhance engagement by collaborating with UI-UX experts and external stakeholders, fostering dialogue and data exchange between them and our researchers.

The Engagement Platform is the core of the FCL Global ecosystem, a hub for user connections. Maintaining this central position requires not only a user-friendly interface but also clear policies and governance to ensure predictability and reliability. This focus is central to our ongoing efforts to further develop the Engagement Platform.
