Future of Construction Symposium 2026: Construction of Futures

The 'Future of Construction' symposium explores how technology shapes the way we design and build. The accelerating convergence of technological domains in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) invites us to rethink human capability, skill, and agency. At this intersection, AI, extended reality, and robotics are transforming digital fabrication and augmented design into active sites of experimentation. The “Construction of Future(s)” edition asks how these technologies are reshaping modes of practice and which futures they might construct.

Talk #4: Fiona Collins - Building Spatial Intelligence from 2D and 3D Measurements

Architects and engineers have long used sensing and measurement technologies to capture the real world and embed their designs within it. Today, the built environment faces increasing demands for comfort, safety, resilience, scalability, and resource efficiency. With advances in machine perception, raw XYZ measurements alone are no longer sufficient, provisioning actionable insights is a must. From an industry research perspective at Hexagon, this seminar draws on existing AI solutions to present the vision of digital twins across scales, where AI-driven interpretation transforms sensor data into decision-ready knowledge for both humans and autonomous agents.

Talk #2: Prof. Dr. Rosa Barba - Setting a Performative Frame between Fact and Fiction

In my work, cinema becomes an instrument to interrogate the qualities of space. I often manipulate the apparatuses of cinema such that projectors are transformed into new mechanical objects that generate information in real time, and that turn on themselves and bend the conventions of cinema to the requirements, possibilities, or limitations of their new forms. My aim is to create spaces that are not limited by the convention of two-dimensional projection but that open up narrative possibilities by dissolving the barriers between the space of the projection and the space of the spectator and space beyond. My intention in this research project is to propose a journey from cinema to another kind of film, through an objectification of a filmic ontology into a hyperspace whose nature and limits remain to be defined. This space beyond consists of spaces stacked on top of each other and is reached through the concept of “embarkation,” that is, a journey from A to B, with a change of gear in order to create new mental places of experience and consciousness. How do we create a performative setting where fact and fiction can be intertwined?

How do we assimilate observations in global glacier modeling?
Seminar

How do we assimilate observations in global glacier modeling?

Mountain glaciers are retreating worldwide, with impacts ranging from local water resources and hazards to global sea-level rise. To predict what comes next, we rely on global glacier evolution models informed by past observations. Direct observations are rare because there are about 275,000 glaciers around the world, often located in complex, remote terrain. In recent years, however, new global datasets based on satellite observations have become available, enabling more advanced ways to inform our models. This talk explains how calibration and data assimilation help models learn from observations, and how these methods have evolved in global glacier modeling. I will focus on the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM), show how it uses data today, and describe its current default assimilation strategy. I will then outline a new, more flexible approach inspired by 4D-Var data assimilation, widely used in weather and ocean science. The aim is a global, adaptable framework that makes the best use of diverse observations and improves our forecasts of glacier change.

Modeling Coupled Subglacial Hydrology and Ice Dynamics Across Polar and Alpine Glaciers using SHAKTI/ISSM
Seminar

Modeling Coupled Subglacial Hydrology and Ice Dynamics Across Polar and Alpine Glaciers using SHAKTI/ISSM

Glacier velocity is modulated by water pressure beneath the ice, impacting how easily the ice slides over its bed. The subglacial drainage system is difficult to observe directly and remains a large source of uncertainty in understanding and predicting future glacier and ice sheet dynamics. Numerical models can provide insights into the coupled processes of water and ice. I will discuss applications, advances, and challenges of coupled subglacial hydrology–ice dynamics modeling in both Greenland and High Mountain Asia, using the Subglacial Hydrology And Kinetic, Transient Interactions (SHAKTI) and the Ice-sheet and Sea-level System Model (ISSM). In Northeast Greenland, I explore how decadal scale changes in ice surface elevation influence changes in winter background state subglacial hydrology, ice velocity, and basal melt rates. In High Mountain Asia, many glaciers sit at sufficiently high altitude to experience little surface melt, but others sustain several meters of surface melt each summer and exhibit seasonal velocity patterns. I will present coupled simulation results for Drang Drung Glacier in Ladakh, India and discuss emerging research questions in the region relating glaciers, water, and people.

Einfach Bauen - Thomas Auer

The construction industry is under increasing pressure: rising energy demand, limited resources, and growing climate requirements are reshaping how we design and build. These challenges highlight the need for approaches that are both efficient and environmentally grounded. Thomas Auer, professor at the Technical University of Munich and for two decades managing partner at Transsolar, is internationally recognised for his contributions to climate-responsive design. His work links architecture with building physics, promoting solutions that are simple, robust, and closely aligned with environmental performance. In his lecture, he will explore how a clearer, climate-oriented design mindset can support more resilient and resource-conscious buildings.

The glacier cracked from side to side: towards stochastic modelling of calving events
Seminar

The glacier cracked from side to side: towards stochastic modelling of calving events

Calving glaciers (lake-terminating or tidewater) represent a key uncertainty in future glacier projections, both at the scale of the ice sheets, but also at more local scales within mountain settings around the globe. As mountain glaciers retreat, many form new proglacial lakes in newly exposed overdeepenings, turning formerly land-terminating glaciers into lake-terminating ones, leading to profound shifts in their behaviour. In particular, calving processes become active, leading to an additional source of ablation, but also providing potential triggers for glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs) should a sufficiently large calving event leading to a dam breach occur. Yet, modelling calving accurately at large spatial or temporal scales remains an unsolved challenge in glaciology. Explicit fracture modelling (as used in e.g. the Helsinki Discrete Element Model, HiDEM) is far too computationally expensive to model more than a few hours or days of calving activity, whereas various parameterisations as commonly used in ice-sheet models (often based on some simple threshold criterion, such as water depth or the von Mises stress) require tuning, lack physical justification, and remain deeply unsatisfactory once the glacier state changes significantly from its initial state. The crevasse-depth criterion, as implemented in the open-source, full-Stokes, 3D finite-element-model, Elmer/Ice, has shown promise as a physically based calving model, yet remains computationally burdensome for longer-term studies and is known to under-predict the number of calving events. Here, we present recent work building on the calving implementation in Elmer/Ice that treats calving as a stochastic process, allowing significant improvements in long-term predictions of calving rates and styles, and the possibility of easily implementing the function in lower-order models once validated in Elmer/Ice. We present results from two Greenlandic tidewater glaciers, including coupled subglacial hydrology, to showcase the performance and range of the model.

Zürich Dialoge zur Verdichtung/ Zurich: Dialogues on Densification. Exhibition Opening

How can Zurich continue to densify without compromising urban quality? And how can the public amenities that contribute to the city’s liveability be secured in the long term? Dialogues on Densification explores scenarios that address these questions. The exhibition traces Zurich’s historical development and examines the role of robust urban planning codes and regulations, while also considering how these instruments may need to be reassessed today. It investigates design-led approaches to guiding densification in qualitative terms. Film Screening: The Disappearance of Robin Hood

London, 1972 – post-war values of social welfare give rise to an era of utopian housing projects. Among the most radical stands Alison and Peter Smithson’s Robin Hood Gardens estate. Blending documentary and fictional elements, intimate portraits of residents unfold an emotional, humorous, and multifaceted story of the project, interwoven with the voices of experts and decision-makers. Presented as a film screening at ETH Wohnforum – ETH CASE and followed by a roundtable discussion, the work reflects on a profoundly transformed London fifty years later and asks: where has Robin Hood gone?

Talk #1: Pierre Chevremont - Can AI think Architecture?

The current wave of Artificial Intelligence has begun to profoundly impact the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry. Generalist Large Multi-modal Models and advanced image-generation pipelines, alongside AI-based building cost and performance simulations, are increasingly adopted in daily practice among architects. To what extent does this technology transform the design and planning process today? What will be possible soon? What are the real risks and opportunities, and how do they differ from those induced by previous technological shifts? We will address these issues through case studies of AI implementation within architectural practice. Beyond professional utility, we will explore the cultural implications of generative AI in architecture and the visual arts. As LLMs mimic the discourses of architectural theory and image-generating models embed reminiscences from the entire history of visual culture, they have the potential to act as powerful engines of synthetic imagination. Examining the current performance and limitations of these systems leads us to pose questions of a more critical nature: What does AI understand about architecture? To what extent are language and vision models able to represent architectural concepts? How do these models comprehend space? And how creative can generative AI really be? In short - can machines now 'think' architecture?

Building information is currently not treated as something valuable beyond its immediate scope of application. One of the reasons for this is the lack of a long term value proposition and/or clear pathways for generating revenue using building data. As a result, valuable building information is unavailable to interested individuals and data analytic companies. In order to monetise building data, it has to be first systematically generated or collected (e.g., during the construction phase of a building). Furthermore, building data must be maintained, curated and regularly updated to remain relevant and up-to-date as time passes. All this incurs costs and companies may not see the point of doing so beyond what is needed to achieve their immediate tasks at hand. Among other potential use-cases for building data assets, they may provide information about building components and their materials to entities that specialise in mining and recycling building materials, thus contributing to a circular building materials economy. Pathways for generating revenue would provide the necessary incentives to maintain and update data until the building is demolished (and possibly beyond). We believe that building data assets have a crucial role to play in the context of sustainable material flows in circular future cities. To this end we use tokenised data assets on a Blockchain as a tool to connect building owners with the consumers of building information, coordinate the activities of the built ecosystem and at the same time, maintain the economic incentives required to keep the wheels running

It is well known that the design of buildings and urban environments has a strong influence on our emotional state and experience. Urban places, in particular, are also typically experienced in various levels of human occupancy – depending on the time of day, places from main streets to parks, can be almost empty or bustling with pedestrians, patrons, residents and visitors. How does the presence of other people influence our subjective experience of places? Does the design of urban environments moderate the effects of social presence? Using multiple measurement of human emotions drawing from environmental psychology and neuroscience, we begin to understand how design and presence of people jointly modulate our experiences in cities. In this talk, I will present the conceptual background and findings from recent and ongoing work done as part of the FCL2 Cognition Perception and Behaviour in Urban Environments project and more recently the IntraCREATE SEED project ‘NICE’, and how this can contribute to the planning of future urban developments.
